Schools out for summer! It’s the season of vacations, relaxing, water sports, and BBQ’s! Even though we spend so much time outdoors during the warmer months of the year, we still want a nice cool safe haven to retreat to, once we are ready to cool down! Summer is peak air conditioning season, so we have to tips to help you get the most out of your AC this summer!
# 1 Insulation
Insulation plays a huge role in the efficiency and effectiveness, and will help you get the most our of your AC and heater as well. A well insulated home will not only stay cooler, but also be more wallet friendly. Insulation helps keep cool air in and hot air out, which means your AC doesn’t have to work so hard to maintain the temperature. Check attics, crawl spaces, and any wall outlets with openings to the outdoors. Make sure doors and windows have proper weather striping and that caulking isn’t damaged.
#2 Cover Windows
Windows provide us with light and a view to the outside world. However, they are also a source to wasted energy. The
heat from the outside can penetrate right through the glass, which means your AC will have to work harder to cool your home. Keep windows covered to block excess heat from penetrating. Blinds work really well, or they also make thermal curtains that help keep hot air out and cool air in. Thermal window treatments will not only help you get the most out of your AC this summer, but also help with your heater during the winter.
#3 Ceiling Fans
Ceiling fans can also help keep things cooler by circulating the air around the room. In fact ceiling fans can help make the room feel 10-15 degrees cooler. This makes maintaining the temperature in your home easier. Ceiling fans are also more affordable to operate.
#4 Adjust the Thermostat
One of the easiest ways you can get the most out of your AC this summer is to adjust the thermostat. Raise the temperature 10-15 degrees when you are not home. This helps save energy and keeps the home comfortable for your return. There is no sense in running the AC full blast when you are away. While you may want to maintain a cool home for your pets and so that you don’t have to return to a sweltering home after a long day at work, you can do this at a higher temperature and save money at the same time.
#5 Maintenance and Inspection
Having your AC serviced once a year will help you get the most out of your AC and keep in you in the cool! Regular maintenance keeps parts in good condition and insures that there are not warning signs of impending failure. In addition, by cleaning the parts and the vents you enable your unit to do a better job, and not have to work as hard. Wear and tear can take their toll on your AC unit, so the harder it has to work the more problems you could face.
